Hallmark plastic retriever dummies are made of heavy duty plastic for long lasting durability. Since most black dummies are used in cold weather, they are made with a higher percentage of rubber to keep them flexible. The different colors of dummies are used in different situations. Black dummies are used when there is a very light background so the dark dummy will show up easier for the dog to see. Conversely, the white retriever dummy is designed for darker backgrounds on marked retrieves where the white will contrast and is easier for the dog to visualize. Orange dummies are used for blind retrieves since dogs are fairly color blind and can't see the orange. The orange allows you to put them out in the cover and still be able to see the very distinct orange and at the same time have them not be "seen" by the dog. Using a white dummy for blind retrieves often teaches the dog the bad habit of running to any "white object" while out in the field, such as a discarded milk jug or piece or paper, since it contrasts well and it is very visible to the dog, thus also discouraging the dog to use its nose instead of it's eyes.
